Unit builder Warsco in Genk-Zuid will soon be deploying staff to transport aid supplies to Poland for the emergency shelter of refugees. The first shipment will depart soon, with the plan to deliver aid on a weekly basis.
“We have many employees from Poland,” says Marc Warson, CEO of Warsco Units in Genk. “So it’s natural that the war comes up in conversation. It became clear to us that many refugees who have fled Ukraine and crossed the border into Poland are in need of shelter. That’s how we came up with the idea of organizing collection drives. And it’s going incredibly well. We’re receiving goods from other companies, stores, and associations. We only take what’s needed, and the people living there know best what that is. We’ve set up a system where our Polish employees, when they travel back to their hometown of Ryglice, can take the truck and deliver the supplies directly to the official agencies. They also receive proof of delivery. We try to send different Polish employees each time so that a routine is established, and we can drive a full truck there once a week.”
Housing units for refugees Remarkably, various cities and municipalities are now approaching Warsco for semi-permanent housing units to accommodate war refugees. “Mechelen has already ordered around twenty,” continues Warson. “We have different types, for both large and small families, and they include separate sanitary facilities, a kitchen, and a toilet.”
